Is spray foam the right insulation for my house?

Spray foam insulation in San Luis is foam we spray onto surfaces like the underside of your roof deck, where it stops air leaks and slows the heat moving through the insulated shell of your house. It's the right fix for some homes and more than others need, and the difference usually comes down to what's in your attic.

Most people call us about a hot room upstairs, the room over the garage or a power bill that won't come down, and foam is one answer to that, not the only one. The price moves with the size of the space, the foam type and thickness, how hard the attic is to get into, and whether old insulation has to come out first through insulation removal. The schedule turns on that removal, whether the city wants a permit and the time the product needs before you can come back inside. You get your own number from the estimate, after I've looked at the attic in person.

How we do spray foam insulation

I start by asking about asthma, allergies or past reactions in the house, because that decides whether I suggest foam at all. If foam fits, we pick open-cell or closed-cell and plan the day you'll be out of the home around the product we use. On spray day the crew pulls out any soaked or dirty old material and does the air sealing, closing gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch, so nothing gets sealed in that should have come out. Then we spray, keeping the edges as full as the middle, since thin coverage at the edges is where heat sneaks in. Some foams need a covering such as a coating or drywall, depending on the product or the code, and we'll tell you before the job if yours does. When we're done, I'll remind you to tell any plumber or electrician working near the foam later not to heat it or grind it, because that can release harmful fumes from foam that's otherwise settled down.

Foam costs more than other options, and it seals air while it insulates. In a lot of houses, sealing the gaps and topping up with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, usually makes more sense for the money. The exception is when your ducts and AC equipment live up there, and that's when foam under the roof deck earns its price. Either way, we look at the job as attic insulation first and decide on the material after that.

Hiring for spray foam insulation in San Luis

Under Arizona law, someone without a contractor license can only take casual or minor work under $1,000 total, labor and materials together, and that exemption ends where the job needs a local building permit. So check that whoever sprays your attic holds a contractor license. The City of San Luis builds to the International Residential Code and the International Energy Conservation Code. Before we start, we check with the building office in the city where your house is, and if a permit is needed, we pull it and set up the inspections. If you'd rather ask yourself, the city's building inspections office takes calls at 928 341-8564.

Most of what we see here is hot rooms and high bills, and plenty of the attics we open have ducts running through them, old insulation packed down thin at the edges or a hatch nobody ever sealed. We find the same mix on jobs in Somerton and Yuma, and we work the cities around them too.

Frequently asked questions

Is closed-cell or open-cell spray foam better for my home?

Closed-cell foam, the dense kind that blocks moisture, insulates about twice as well per inch, which is one reason it costs more, while open-cell blocks sound much better. If you want the most insulating power in a tight space, closed-cell usually wins, and if noise or budget matters more, open-cell is worth a look. I'll go over both for your attic at the estimate.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in San Luis AZ?

Spray foam in the Yuma area usually costs about $2,000 to $4,500 for 1,000 square feet at 3 inches thick. That's the area's going rate, not our quote, and the choices covered above move it up or down. Your own number comes from the estimate after I've seen the attic.

How long after spray foam can my family move back in?

Many manufacturers suggest staying out for 24 hours after high-pressure spray foam goes in, with the recommended ventilation running, and the time can vary by product. Plan a day away for the kids and pets, and we'll set that day by the product we're using. We'll also tell you anything the crew needs set up in the house before spray day.

Is spray foam safe if someone in my house has asthma?

Spray foam isn't always a good fit when someone has asthma. Federal consumer safety guidance tells people with asthma, respiratory allergies, skin conditions or a past reaction to isocyanates, a group of chemicals, to review the product information carefully, and some of those households pick a different insulation. That's why I ask before I suggest foam, and blown-in is often the better call in those homes.

What is the best way to insulate an attic with AC ducts in it?

Spraying foam under the roof deck is usually the best way, because it brings the AC equipment and ducts inside the insulated part of the house. Any air that leaks from the ducts then still helps cool or heat the house instead of the attic. That's the case where I'll tell you foam is worth the extra cost.

What causes moisture problems in an attic sealed with spray foam?

Moisture builds up when an attic is sealed with foam instead of vented and nothing is in place to remove it. Open-cell foam also stops air at normal thicknesses but still lets water vapor pass through. We go over how your attic will handle moisture before we close it up.

  • Attic insulation

If the whole attic needs a plan, from what's up there now to how deep it should go, this is where we start before choosing any material.

  • Blown-in insulation

A lower-cost way to add depth over existing insulation when the ducts aren't in the attic and the gaps can be sealed first.
