Request an estimateDoes my house in San Luis need more insulation?
Retrofit insulation adds insulation to a house that's already built, most often blown into the attic you have and sometimes into the walls, and in San Luis it's how you slow down the heat coming through your ceiling.
Most calls start with a room that won't cool down or a summer bill that's hard to look at. The price turns on how many inches are already up there, whether the old material is clean enough to stay, how much air sealing the ceiling needs to close the gaps before anything covers them, and whether the walls need work too. The schedule turns on the same things, plus how easy the attic is to reach and whether the city wants a permit, and your estimate spells out what your house needs before you decide anything.
How we do retrofit insulation
First I check how much insulation the house has now and whether the walls need some too, because a top-up in the attic and a wall job are two different jobs. On older homes I ask the year the house was built before we drill into anything. If the old material is soaked or full of droppings, it comes out, since new insulation on top just buries the problem. Then we seal the gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch so the new layer isn't fighting a draft, and the collars go around hot flues first, because I won't seal a house up tight around one. We set baffles at the eaves to keep the vents breathing, then blow loose fill through a hose, what the trade calls blown-in, evenly out to the edges, since an attic can have plenty in the middle and almost nothing at the eaves.
Most retrofits here are attic insulation jobs, sealing and topping up what's already there. Spray foam insulation costs more and seals air while it insulates, and it has its places, but on an attic that already holds some insulation, sealing the gaps and topping up with loose fill usually does the job for less. I'll tell you which one your house needs, and if the answer is neither, you'll hear that too.
Retrofit insulation in San Luis and the heat it fights
The City of San Luis Building Safety division inspects construction work in the city, so before we start we check with the city on whether your retrofit needs a permit instead of guessing. If it does, we pull the permit and set up the inspections. If you have questions about the city's rules yourself, we'll point you to the right office.
Attics here get brutally hot by midday in summer, so we start early, and the fine dust that blows in at the eaves and around the hatch usually shows us right where the gaps are. We see the same thing on jobs in Somerton and Yuma, and we work in the cities around them too.
Why call us for retrofit insulation
I look at your attic myself
I come out, go up in the attic and write the estimate, so the person pricing your job has actually seen it. A crew lead runs the install with the crew, and I check the work at the end.
Licensed and insured in Arizona
We're licensed and insured. Arizona keeps someone without a contractor's license to minor work under $1,000 in labor and materials, and none that needs a city permit, so ask anyone quoting your attic to show you theirs.
Five years of straight answers
We've been in business since 2021, and I'd rather talk you out of insulation you don't need than sell it to you. If your attic already has plenty, I'll say so and leave.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?
If the insulation sits level with or below the attic floor joists, the beams you'd step on, ENERGY STAR advises adding more, and if it sits well above them, more may not be worth what it costs. A flashlight and a look through the hatch will tell you most of it. Tell us what you see when you call, and I'll confirm it in person.
How much insulation should I add to my attic in San Luis?
An empty attic needs the most, and one that already has 3 to 4 inches needs a smaller top-up to reach the level ENERGY STAR recommends for existing wood-framed homes in our climate. Yuma County, San Luis included, is rated hot and dry for energy code purposes, so the warm-climate levels are the ones that apply here. I measure what you have before I tell you how much to add.
How much does it cost to add attic insulation in Arizona?
Raising a typical 1,500 square foot attic with blown cellulose from R-30 to R-49 usually costs about $2,000 to $5,000 per job in Arizona, and R-value is the measure of how well insulation slows heat. That's a statewide figure for one attic size, not our price, and yours moves with the size of the attic, what has to come out first and how much sealing the ceiling needs. I'll give you your own number after I've looked, and every job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
What is the best way to insulate existing walls without tearing them out?
The usual way is drill and fill, where small holes go in near the top of each wall cavity and the space gets filled with blown-in insulation. It's a common way to do exterior walls that's far less disruptive than opening them up. Whether your walls need it is something I check on the estimate.
Does the age of my house matter before adding insulation?
Yes, it can change what's safe to open up. In a house built before 1980, wall work can fall under lead safety rules depending on how much of the wall gets disturbed, and the electrical code doesn't allow insulation on or around old knob and tube wiring. If you have that wiring or aren't sure, mention it when you call so we plan around it.
Can I add attic insulation myself in Arizona without a license?
Yes, on the house you live in. Arizona's contractor licensing law doesn't apply to owners improving a home that's only for their own use and not for sale or rent, whether they do the work themselves, with their own employees or with licensed contractors. If you go that route, do the sealing before any insulation goes down, since that's the step that usually gets skipped.
Other work that often goes with this
Spray foam insulation
Foam seals air and insulates in one pass, which helps in tight spots where loose fill won't stay put, though it costs more than a simple top-up.
Attic insulation
When the attic is the whole problem, this covers checking what's up there, sealing the ceiling and bringing coverage up evenly from one eave to the other.
