Is blown-in insulation right for my San Luis attic?

Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass blown through a hose onto the floor of a vented attic. In San Luis it's usually the simplest way to bring a thin attic up to a full, even layer that slows the heat coming through your ceiling.

Most calls start with a hot room upstairs or a power bill that climbs every summer, and the first thing I check is how many inches are already up there and what shape they're in. The price moves with the size of the attic, how much air sealing it needs, whether old material has to come out first and whether the attic is floored, and the schedule turns on those same things plus any older wiring that has to be dealt with before insulation goes in. We're based in San Luis and work in Somerton, Yuma and the cities around them, and you get your own figure from the estimate, once I've seen the attic and gone over what it needs with you.

How we do blown-in insulation

We start by looking at what's up there, including the depth you have, the eave vents and any old knob-and-tube wiring, because Energy Department guidance has installers check for live wiring of that kind before insulating and then dam it off or replace it. The same guidance calls for dams of metal flashing or another approved material around heat sources, taller than the finished layer, and for covered junction boxes to be flagged so they stay easy to find. Those are routine checks, and I want them done before anybody seals a house up. Then we seal the gaps in the ceiling, set baffles at the eaves so the vents stay open and the insulation stays out of them, and blow the fill to an even depth across the whole ceiling, out to the edges over the walls, because a deep middle with thin edges is the most common mistake I find in attics.

Blown-in is one part of home insulation, and if the walls or the room over the garage are the real problem, I'll say so. When the old layer is soaked or full of droppings, insulation removal comes first, since new fill over a bad layer just keeps the problem.

Blown-in insulation and the San Luis building code

The City of San Luis has adopted the International Energy Conservation Code with its own amendments, and the city's Building Safety Division enforces the building code, so new blown-in insulation should meet or exceed the levels that code requires. Whether your job needs a permit is the city's call, so before we start we check with the building office, and if a permit is needed we pull it and set up the inspections. If you have questions about the city's rules, I'll point you to the right office.

A lot of the older homes we see have little or nothing in the attic, and what's there is often thin at the edges or piled over the eave vents. We find the same attics on jobs in Somerton and Yuma, and we fix them the same way, by clearing the vents and evening out the layer.

Why call us for blown-in

  • I quote it and check it

I come out and write the estimate after I've been in your attic, and a crew lead runs the install with our crew. I go back up at the end to check the depth and the edges before we call it done.

  • In business since 2021

I worked insulation crews when I was young, spent years in other work, then came back and started this business in 2021. Coming back with fresh eyes made me strict about doing every step in the right order.

  • Licensed and insured

We're licensed and insured. That matters when people are walking the joists over your ceiling.

  • Depth planned to city code

Because San Luis expects new insulation to meet or exceed its energy code, we plan the depth from that and from what's already up there. If you don't need much more, I'll tell you instead of padding the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does blown-in insulation cost in Arizona?

Insulation is rated in R-value, which is how well it slows heat, and a typical 1,500 sq ft attic in Arizona taken from R-30 to R-49 with blown cellulose usually costs about $1,600 to $5,400 for the job. That's the going range, not our price, and yours depends on the size of the attic, how much sealing it needs and whether old material has to come out. The free estimate gives you your own number.

Does my attic need air sealing before blown-in insulation?

Yes, the gaps get sealed first. Loose fill slows heat but doesn't stop air, so insulation laid over an open gap around a can light, a pipe or the attic hatch ends up fighting a draft. Energy Department guidance puts sealing first too, so ask any contractor how their quote handles it.

How do I insulate an attic that has a floor over it?

We lift only the boards we have to, or we fill the space from below through the ceiling. Filling from below leaves the attic floor alone and works well over a garage, where people often store things up top.

How much insulation should my attic have in San Luis?

Enough to meet or exceed what the city's energy code requires, and how much more depends on what's up there now. ENERGY STAR sets its attic targets by climate zone and by whether the attic is bare or already has some insulation, so I measure the inches you have before I say what to add.

What is the best way to insulate an attic, blown-in or spray foam?

For most attics, sealing the gaps and topping up with loose fill is the better deal. Foam costs more and seals air while it insulates, so it earns its price when your ductwork runs through the attic. If your house is one where spray foam makes sense, I'll tell you why.

How long does it take to blow insulation into an attic?

Most of the time goes into the prep, not the blowing. Sealing, baffles and any wiring checks set the pace, and an attic that needs old material pulled out first takes longer. I'll tell you what your job involves when I come out for the estimate.

  • Home insulation

If the attic is only part of why your house runs hot, a whole-house look covers the walls, floors and room over the garage so you fix the right spot.

  • Insulation removal

When the old attic layer is wet, matted or full of droppings, it has to come out before anything new goes in, or the smell and the damp stay.
