Is closed-cell foam worth it for your San Luis home?

Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense spray foam we put under the roof deck or in the walls of San Luis homes, where it insulates, stops drafts and slows moisture with the same material.

Most people call us because the rooms under the roof stay hot, the room over the garage never feels right, or the power bill keeps climbing even after someone added attic insulation. The price moves with the square footage, how many inches the job needs, whether old insulation has to come out and whether the roof needs repairs first. The schedule turns on that roof work and on the day you can get everyone out of the house. I come out, look at it in person and go over what your house needs before I write the estimate, so your own figure comes from that visit.

How we install closed-cell foam insulation

I start at the roof, because foam sprayed under a leaking deck hides the problem until it shows up in the framing. If the deck leaks or the roof is near the end of its life, I tell you before any foam goes under it. Then I put closed-cell side by side with open-cell, since closed-cell gives you more insulation per inch and costs more, and you should see both sides before you pay for it. The safety checks get done before we seal a house up tight. On spray day our crew closes the gaps around pipes, lights and the hatch, sprays the foam in passes that each rise about an inch, and keeps the depth even at the edges where the roof meets the walls, because that's where thin spots usually show up.

Foam isn't always the answer. If your ducts don't run through the attic, sealing the gaps and topping up with blown-in insulation usually wins on price, and I'll say so. If you're weighing the lighter, cheaper foam, we'll price open-cell foam insulation right beside it, and property managers get the same closed-cell work on shops and offices through our commercial insulation service.

Closed-cell foam insulation in San Luis and the city's rules

The City of San Luis works from the national residential and energy codes, and it schedules building inspections by phone, email or online. That list doesn't tell you whether your foam job needs a permit, so before work starts we check with the city's building office. If a permit is needed, we pull it and set up the inspections, and if you have questions about the city's rules, I'll point you to the right office.

We're based in San Luis and work in Somerton, Yuma and the cities around them, where we see plenty of single-story homes with the ductwork running through the attic. That's where foam under the roof deck usually earns its price, because it brings the ducts inside the insulated space instead of leaving them out in the attic air.

Why call us for closed-cell foam

  • I write your estimate myself

I come out, look at the roof deck and attic in person, and write the estimate after we've gone over what the house needs. I'd rather talk you out of foam you don't need than sell it to you.

  • A crew lead runs the install

A crew lead runs the job with our crew, and I check the work at the end before we call it done. That way the person who wrote the estimate sees the finished job. Backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

  • Back in the trade since 2021

I worked insulation crews when I was young, spent years in other work, then came back and started this business in San Luis in 2021. Coming back with fresh eyes is why we do every step in order, roof first and foam last.

  • Hiring a licensed crew here

We're licensed and insured. Arizona law excuses owners from contractor licensing when they improve their own home for their own use and not for sale or rent, which is why I ask whether you live in the house.

Frequently asked questions

Is closed-cell foam worth the extra cost over open-cell foam?

It usually is when you want the most insulation from each inch, because closed-cell foam is about twice as energy efficient per inch as open-cell. Under a roof deck it also works as the vapor control layer, the layer that slows moisture moving through the roof. Open-cell is still worth weighing if noise is what bothers you most, since it blocks sound much better.

How much does closed-cell spray foam cost near San Luis, AZ?

A Yuma area cost guide puts closed-cell spray foam at about $1 to $1.50 per board foot, which is one square foot of foam one inch thick. Attics typically take 3 to 5 inches and exterior walls up to 3, so ask how many inches a quote covers before you compare prices. Your own number comes from the estimate.

How long do we need to stay out of the house after spray foam is installed?

Federal consumer safety guidance says residents should leave the home for at least 24 hours when spray foam is installed. Plan a place for the whole household and any tenants to stay, and we'll set the install date around it.

Does my roof need work before spray foam goes under it?

It might, because national guidance says the roof should be inspected before foam goes under an existing deck, with any leaks fixed and the damage repaired first. If the roof is at or near the end of its life, replacing it is worth considering, so budget for roof work along with the foam.

How do I get my attic ready for closed-cell spray foam?

Industry guidance says that when an existing attic is turned into an unvented one, sealed off from outside air, the old insulation on the attic floor should come out. An unvented attic also needs a way to remove moisture. I go over both at the estimate so they're part of the plan before anyone sprays.

What is the best time of year to spray closed-cell foam?

There isn't one answer for every job, because temperature and humidity play a big part in how spray foam cures. EPA guidance tells owners to ask the contractor and the foam maker about the right season and weather for spraying, and we'll talk through that for your date at the estimate.

  • Open-cell foam insulation

Open-cell is the lighter, lower-cost foam, worth pricing out when a noisy room or the road bothers you more than packing insulation into every inch.

  • Commercial insulation

Property managers call us for shops, offices and other commercial buildings that run hot or cost too much to cool, and we plan the work around the people inside.
